On 2 July, over 30 pupils and staff from Malvern College Hong Kong arrived in Chengdu to begin an eight-day journey as part of the Malvern Mingle Summer Camp. Blending human geography, natural ecology, and both traditional and contemporary Chinese culture, the programme offered a rich and multi-dimensional learning experience. pupils for the Hong Kong participants.

Upon arrival in Chengdu, the pupils took part in a brief yet meaningful opening ceremony at Malvern College Chengdu, marking the official start of their journey of discovery and growth. From the dramatic flair of Sichuan opera performance and the delights of authentic Sichuan cuisine to immersive experiences in an “edible museum” and hands-on workshops in traditional handicrafts, every activity provided a feast for both the senses and the mind. The journey then led pupils to the Sanxingdui Museum, where they travelled back through time and explored the mysterious legacy of the ancient Shu civilisation. A visit to Dujiangyan—an iconic irrigation system followed, where pupils witnessed first-hand the remarkable harmony between ancient engineering wisdom and modern water management.

One of the most adorable highlights was the volunteer programme at the Giant Panda Base. Pupils became ‘panda dietitians’ for the day, preparing food and learning about the science behind wildlife conservation. It was a heartfelt lesson in environmental stewardship, bringing the concept of “loving nature” vividly to life. The following day, themed New “Rong” Era, took place in a winter wonderland setting. Through skiing, team challenges and simulation activities, pupils learned to step out of their comfort zones, work together and grow through teamwork and resilience.

The exploration of technology and the future was ignited at the Aerospace Museum. From fixed simulator experiences and aviation safety lessons to emergency slide training, each activity ignited the pupils’ imagination and curiosity about the vastness of space. Here, knowledge met inspiration to provide a launchpad for dreams to take flight.
The eight-day itinerary was both rich and fulfilling. Cultural traditions were felt with every step, and friendships quietly blossomed through shared experiences. As the camp drew to a close, pupils from Malvern College Hong Kong presented a heartfelt handwritten letter to their hosts at Malvern College Chengdu, expressing their sincere gratitude to the teachers at MCC. Their genuine, touching words were perhaps the most meaningful response to this memorable exchange.

Dear Teachers of Malvern College Chengdu,
I’m Dylan Chen, and I’m representing all the pupils who took part in this year’s amazing 2025 MCC summer camp. We had a wonderful time at the Chengdu summer camp, and we are very grateful.
Thank you for organizing so many great activities for us. From exploring Sanxingdui and helping to care for pandas, to experiencing a winter wonderland and the aviation museum, each activity taught us new things and showed us how rich Chinese culture is.
Your patience and encouragement made us feel at home in this new place. Whether we were learning something new or trying a new challenge, having you around gave us the courage to try.
This camp gave us lots of gains and helped us better understand just how interesting and fascinating Chinese culture is. Thank you all for your care — we will always remember these happy memories.
