Annual STEM WEEK at MCC

IN THIS SECTION

 March 28, 2025

Eat Pie at π Day

Every year on 14th March, recognised globally as π Day or International Mathematics Day, we celebrate the first three digits of Pi (3.14). As is tradition at MCC, our senior school mathematics department upheld this custom celebration by organising an intellectually delicious event “Pie-Eating Challenge”.

In the Name of Flight: A Journey Towards Future Horizons

The 2025 Prep school STEM Week themed “Aero Malvern Flyers Fair” transformed our campus into an interactive laboratory for flight exploration. From aircraft construction to various flying challenges, from virtual reality simulations to interdisciplinary applications, this event not only ignited scientific curiosity but demonstrated our school’s tangible achievements in nurturing STEM education.

At noon, the drone zone buzzed with pupils piloting UAVs with surgical precision. Nearby, gasps of wonder echoed from VR headsets. In the aircraft workshop, pupils transformed blueprint designed into flying machines – tightening screws, calibrating circuits, before witnessing their creations take flight in the test zone. When the first “Malvern” aircraft pierced the sky, it wasn’t just the wings that cut through the air, but also our pupils’ soaring aspirations for scientific discovery.

Science forms the skeleton of flight, technology its pulsating lifeblood, art is the patterns on the wings’ contours, while mathematics and engineering emerge as the codes connecting the stars.  As STEM education practitioners, Malvern College Chengdu Prep school embeds science and ICT from Prep 1. The learning and development of Mathematics is also a top priority, with project-based learning deeply integrating Mathematics, Science and ICT. In the Maths curriculum, we gradually transition from Chinese to English Maths from the Lower to Upper year, with the whole of Prep 6 being taught in English to ensure a smoother connection with senior school curriculum.

As one aircraft after another traced arcs across the azure sky, the children’s eyes sparkled now just with excitement, but also with a deep awe for the mysteries of science. Here, formulas transcend textbook pages, manifesting as GPS coordinates in drone navigation. Teamwork was not just a slogan, but a lived experience filled with warm reassurances exchanged during debugging setbacks. STEM Week, we look forward to seeing you again next year!
