MCI Role Model | MCI Role Model From MCC (1)

Malvern College International recently published its ‘Malvern Role Models of 2025’ and we’re proud to announce that among them, are five outstanding individuals from Malvern College Chengdu. These five role models —two staff and three pupils — have set off from our Chengdu campus to make their mark on the global stage and their stories reflect the exceptional talent and spirit found throughout the worldwide Malvern family.

Pupils

 

James Zhang

Academic Scholar | Student Council President | House Captain

 

James is an Academic scholar and a respected leader within the Malvern College Chengdu community. As a school prefect, boarding house captain, and president of the school council, he plays an active role in shaping student life. He is also a key contributor to school open days and social events and was the recipient of Malvern’s prestigious Clark Cup award in 2024.

James excels in economics, achieving top honours in the National Economics Challenge and earning national gold distinctions in both microeconomics and macroeconomics. His enthusiasm for the subject extends to independent research, and he recently explored international trade and political economic policies through an Extended Project Qualification (EPQ). He also demonstrates strong analytical and diplomatic skills, winning Best Delegate at XIA-MUN IX, an award granted to only one student on the committee.

Beyond academics, James is a key figure in sports, leading the school’s football and basketball teams to victory in CISA tournaments. He also represented Malvern College Chengdu by delivering a speech at The World Games 2025 Chengdu. Dedicated to sustainability, he works with the school’s eco-committee and helped deliver a presentation at the finals of the China Schools Awards: Pupils of Sustainability.

Highly regarded by both staff and peers, James is known for his positive attitude, teamwork, and ability to inspire those around him. Through his leadership, academic excellence, and commitment to school life, he is a valued member of the Malvern community and a role model to all.

 

 

Coco Liu

Head Girl | Scientist

 

Upper Sixth student, Coco Liu, is Head Girl for the 2024-25 academic year at Malvern College Chengdu. Known for her strong leadership and organisational skills, she thrives in her role where she takes responsibility for guiding her peers and representing the student body. Coco’s excellent problem-solving abilities help the prefect team run smoothly.

Outside of her leadership role, Coco is a passionate scientist. She’s fascinated by the complexities of biological systems, especially the development of embryos. This curiosity drives her academic success, and she applies the same dedication and precision to her studies as she does to her leadership.

When she’s not focused on her academic or leadership roles, Coco loves the creative world of musical theatre. It’s her perfect way to unwind and escape into a creative space. Her ability to balance her academic work, leadership duties, and personal interests shows her versatility and determination to excel in all areas of life. Coco’s thoughtful and balanced approach makes her a natural role model, and she continues to inspire those around her with her dedication and enthusiasm.

 

 

Catherine Zhang

Mathematician | Linguist | Progress Award Winner

 

Catherine Zhang is one of the most vibrant and motivated students at Malvern College Chengdu. With a passion for movies, music, learning French, and solving puzzles, Catherine is known for her outgoing personality, kindness, and genuine enthusiasm for the Malvern community. She thrives in the welcoming and supportive environment at MCC, describing the school as a close-knit community that feels like her second family. Her approachable nature and positive attitude help her to build strong connections with both her peers and staff, who are always eager to offer their support.

Catherine has excelled both academically and in extracurricular activities, consistently demonstrating her commitment to excellence. Among her many accomplishments, she received a Silver Medal in the American Language League and a Certificate of Proficiency in the Australian Mathematics Competition. She was also awarded the Best Progress Award in her final examinations, further highlighting her dedication to continuous improvement. In recognition of her all-round capabilities, Catherine also earned the Best All-Rounder Award, reflecting her success across various aspects of school life.

With her focus on growth and determination, Catherine is poised to achieve even greater success in the future, driven by her strong work ethic and passion for learning.
