For students, entering MCC secondary school is undoubtedly a new stage. And when they come to our school, you will find that the students will undergo different changes academically or personally. What kind of specific areas can help the students to rebuild their routine and passion for learning?

At MCC secondary school, the subjects will match Chinese National Curriculum standards, and at the same time, MCC has gathered teachers with rich experience, enthusiasm, and a “student-centered” approach in each subject; equipped with different educational resources in an enabling environment, trains students to become excellent international talents with a global perspective. Dr. Jill Cowie

Head of School

Dr. Jill Cowie

Dr. Jill Cowie holds a BSc (Hons) and a Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of Edinburgh, a M.Sc. in Chemistry from the University of Aberdeen, and a PGCE from the University of Leeds. She is a member of the Royal Society of Chemistry and has received Chartered Chemist (CChem) certification. Dr. Cowie explains “I have been devoted to education research and teacher training throughout my entire career and that has never stopped, not even for one day”. After assuming her role at Malvern College Chengdu, she commented that “I hope to work together with our team members to create a warm and friendly school where every student will be cared for, supported, and recognised. This is our commitment to the healthy development of our students.” From our continuous curriculum development and our diversified co-curricular activities to the moral education team’s supervision of the school development and our efficient home-school communication, all our activities share one goal, that is, to nurture our students into international talents with a Chinese heart.

 

 
 

Jennifer Pun Fan

Jennifer Pun Fan, graduated from the South China Normal University and continued her studies at the Education University of Hong Kong. She won an Outstanding Achievement Award and obtained the Hong Kong Registered Teacher Certificate. Ms. Pun attained her Master of Education, with a major in Chinese Language and Literature Education, as well as a Postgraduate Certificate in School Leadership and Management, in Hong Kong. She was also a Territory-wide System Assessment Examiner and Reviewer for Hong Kong Examinations and Assessment Authority. As an expert working in the education field for many years, she has developed extensive experience and unique insights. Her passion for education and devotion to intensive research is really admirable. Ms. Pun won the principal award “Sun” – “Most Famous Principal with Educational Spirit” in the TENCENT International Schools Award Ceremony, 2018 and she completed courses at Peking University’s International School Operation and Management Seminar. The International Education Curriculum Handbook for Primary Schools was written in 2019, and Ms. Pun was awarded a Registration Certificate by the National Copyright Administration of China. In the same year, she won the “Most Popular Principal in China” award. She has more than 20 years’ experience in education, including over 10 years spent in highly reputable bilingual immersion schools in the Independent Schools Foundation Academy of Hong Kong and Keystone Academy of Beijing. As a highly experienced educator, she has made outstanding contributions to school management, teacher training, and curriculum development in Chinese language and culture, science and information technology, project-based learning, and cross-disciplinary inquiry etc.

Simon Zhang

Simon Zhang

Simon Zhang holds a Master of Education, from Hong Kong Polytechnic University and has rich academic management experience in the integration of the Chinese National Curriculum and the International Curriculum. Simon formally took office at Malvern College Chengdu in August this year. With more than 10 years teaching management experience gained in both international and local schools in Hong Kong and Shenzhen, he believes that the overall development of students should go hand-in-hand with their personal development. To this end, teaching methods such as inquiry-based teaching and heuristics must be combined with the holistic education’s ‘model thinking’ to cultivate outstanding students.
 
 

Yolanda Zhao

Yolanda Zhao graduated from the University of York with a master’s degree in Global and International Citizenship Education. She has almost 10 years’ teaching and management experience gained in international schools in China and abroad. As an A-level Chinese examiner of Cambridge Assessment International Education, Yolanda holds a middle school teacher certification and an ‘Outstanding Teacher’ training certificate from OLEVI. She previously served as the international Chinese course teacher at Dalian Royal School, and then became the Director of the Senior High School Teaching Service Centre and a Cambridge training coordinator. In this period, she led and developed the Chinese team, and engaged in the heuristic course design of international Chinese. She has also undertaken a number of successful studies in the globalization of Chinese language and literature teaching methods.

Stephen Nganga

Deputy Head of Academics, Mathematics Teacher

Stephen Nganga

Stephen Nganga graduated from Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology where he majored in Mathematics and Computer Science. Stephen gained a Bachelor of Science with first-class honours and has 15 years’ teaching experience. His skill lies in integrating Chinese and foreign mathematics courses and, in class, he presents key learning points in a clear, simple, and engaging manner. Stephen previously taught in various renowned schools in Nairobi, Kenya and came to China in 2016, where he served as Head of Mathematics and the Head of Academics at an international school. During his teaching in China, he created a working group and was dedicated to integrating Chinese and international mathematics courses. Under his leadership, the Mathematics Department was awarded the honour of the “best department of the year”. Throughout his teaching career Stephen has concentrated on motivating and helping students to achieve better performance in their assessment tests, and his passion and self-giving spirit have won him love, trust and respect from both his students and his colleagues.
 

Esther Liu

Esther Liu completed her senior high school study in New Zealand and went on to graduate from Massey University with a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics, and a Master of Science in Mathematics. She then pursued further study at Cambridge International College, Australia where she obtained a diploma in Business Management. With 13 years’ teaching management experience, she has been dedicated to mathematics teaching and research and has achieved excellent results. Both teachers and students benefit from the relaxed and cheerful atmosphere that Esther’s meticulous teaching style and humorous personality bring into the classroom and she is a firm favourite with both students and parents alike, who all speak highly of her outstanding contributions to maths teaching. Esther has extensive teaching experience having previously been a middle school mathematics teacher in Wellington, New Zealand and after returning to China, she held a range of positions including senior grade mathematics teacher, Head of Mathematics and Head of Academics in various bilingual international schools. Esther also holds a TESOL certificate and as a student-designated teacher for the past three years, she has offered prior and post guidance to her pupils and helped four of her students to successfully gain places to study Mathematics at the University of Oxford, UK.

Nicholas Martin

Head of Pastoral, English Teacher, Humanities Teacher

Nicholas Martin

Nick graduated from the University of Adelaide with a bachelor’s degree in History and Classics and went on to obtains a Graduate Diploma. He is certified by the Teachers Registration Board of South Australia and is also proficient in teaching Cambridge English and Cambridge International courses. In 2020, all students in his IGCSE courses successfully passed the A-level examination with grade A*-C. In China, Nick served as Vice Principal and Head of Humanities at the Chengdu campus of an international school. Whilst there he created and implemented a “Student Behaviour Management and Reward” system to motivate students to acquire corresponding rewards through self-management and while working as Vice Principal, all students in the school made great progress in behaviour regulation and self-management. Nick’s humorous teaching style is one of the many reasons why he is so popular amongst his students.
 

Sarah Yang

Sarah Yang graduated from Beijing Normal University with a bachelor’s degree and is currently studying for a master’s degree at Beijing Foreign Studies University. She has participated in C2 IB training (Chinese A: Literature) in Beijing, Shanghai, Suzhou and Hong Kong and she holds IB Chinese teaching qualifications, and middle school Chinese teaching qualifications. Sarah has previously served as a Chinese teacher for the college entrance examination for many years and has eight years’ experience teaching in the International Department of Chengdu Shude High School; five of which were as teaching and research group leader for Chinese. She has completed many international Chinese open classes and her excellent background will undoubtedly help our students to improve their language learning ability and to acquire greater knowledge of China and to be enthralled by the nations charm.

Argyrios Kampanos

Head of Creative Learning (Music, Art, P.E.)/ Teacher of Music

Argyrios Kampanos

Mr. Argyrios Kampanos (Aris) graduated from Kingston University, London with an MA in Music, before obtaining his PGCE in Secondary Music Education at UCL (University College London). He taught at several prestigious secondary schools in the UK for seven years before moving to China to teach at Malvern College Chengdu. Aris is not only an experienced musician who has performed at several international events and worked with many world-class performers and artists, he is also an energetic, experienced and highly creative music teacher. He plays a wide range of instruments, including drums, guitar, piano, and bass and he sets very high standards for himself when teaching his music classes. As head of the Creative Learning and P.E. Department, which encompasses music, art, and physical education, he also expects all staff in the team to work to the same high standards. Aris is highly passionate about music and is experienced in teaching both the IGCSE and A-level curricula. In the last year, he and his team have led students in holding a winter celebration concert, an art exhibition, and big band performance in “the Launch Ceremony of the Malvern Global Education Network Initiative” that was lauded by teachers and students alike. He is a teacher with an infectious energy, a great love of music, and a high degree of professionalism. His words and behavior, along with those of the department’s other teachers, are a constant positive influence on one creative Malvern student after another.
 
 

Vivian Zhang

Vivian Zhang obtained a bachelor’s degree in Psychology from the University of Minnesota, then graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with a Master of Science in NGO Management. She was also awarded a college scholarship and served as an interviewer for the University of Pennsylvania (Ivy League) in East Asia, providing valuable feedback to students. In addition, Zhang was a member of Phi Beta Kappa, the most prestigious academic honour society in the United States and she previously worked as a business analyst (Human Resources) at a world-famous management consulting company and at the United Nations Headquarters in New York. Zhang is also a registered psychological counsellor and has more than 800 hours’ clinical practice experience. With her superior educational background, she gives her students comprehensive guidance in further education and she has helped former pupils gain places at Yale University, Princeton University, Columbia University, the University of Chicago, the London School of Economics and Political Science and Imperial College London.

Dr. Govind Pandey

Head of Science / Secondary Physics Teacher

Dr. Govind Pandey

Dr. Govind Pandey received his university education from India’s University of Allahabad, known as the “Oxford of the East”. He holds an MA and a PhD in Physics, as well as a BA in Software Engineering. During his 25-year career as an educator, Dr. Pandey has amassed extensive experience teaching students of various ages across schools in Singapore, Egypt, the UK, the USA, France, and Germany. Dr. Pandey once mentored a young scientist whose meticulous research was awarded the President’s Award (India) for Innovative Research and Science Project. Dr. Pandey is well versed in the provision of IB, A-Level, AP and Physics courses in various international curricula. To help students develop a broader perspective and practical experience, Dr. Pandey maintains close links, and collaborates on scientific research projects, with graduate schools and research laboratories in Europe and as the head of the Edu-Arctic programme he actively encourages his students to participate in scientific research projects.
 
 

Laura Yi

Ms. Laura Yi graduated from the University of Sydney with a Master of Education. While in Australia, she was involved in the comparison and study of Chinese and Western curricula. She worked as a mathematics teacher in a foreign language school in Sichuan, where she was responsible for teaching and educational research. Ms. Yi was also Head of Mathematics at an international school in Guangzhou, where she organized activities for mathematics teaching and research, and mentored and trained new teachers. Ms. Yi specializes in providing personalized teaching for all her students.

Oetomo Rully Susanto

Oetomo Rully Susanto

Mr. Oetomo Rully Susanto graduated with a bachelor’s degree from Indonesia’s Parahyangan Catholic University. He has previously taught IB/IGCSE/A-Level courses in many renowned high schools in Indonesia and Singapore and was also responsible for managing the academic teams there. Mr. Susanto moved to Dalian in 2019 as a teacher at a leading foreign language school. His experience in International Baccalaureate school system enriches him with student-centered learning approaches while his A level terms strengthened his teaching practice with depth and academic focus. With over 18 years of experience teaching, including 14 years teaching international courses, Mr. Susanto has numerous students in top universities around the world. In addition to his superb teaching experience, Mr. Susanto has a wealth of management skills, he firmly believes that addressing campus safety and security is one of the most important factors in a school’s progression towards excellence and in securing the approval of its parents.
 
 

Maybell Yang

Ms. Maybell Yang majored in English Interpretation at the Southwestern University of Finance and Economics, where she earned a master’s degree. She has also received ESL training at the University of Connecticut. Having in-depth knowledge of a range of curricula from different education systems has given Ms. Yang a clear understanding of the differences between Chinese and Western educational approaches. In her teaching, she excels at integrating the essences and strengths of different curricula to provide students with the most professional teaching. Through her expert teaching and guidance, she has successfully helped many students in higher grades to apply to top universities around the world, such as Imperial College London, The Pennsylvania State University, Columbia University, California Institute of Technology, and The University of Edinburgh.

Blake Winter

Blake Winter

Blake graduated from the University of Nottingham with a master’s certification in Education. He previously worked as an academic mentor at the University of Johannesburg helping to train future teachers. He has also been a House Master at an international school and he accumulated much of his teaching experience in South Africa where he worked as Head of Humanities at Edenvale High School, South Africa. Blake is hugely passionate about sport. He is a provincial cricketer and footballer. Blake also likes to participate in other sports like hockey, swimming and mountain biking. He has also had extensive training and success as a sports co-ordinator and coach by winning many school competitions and improving the delivery of sports programs. Blake always brings great enthusiasm and energy into his classes and in 2020, he won a “Best Teacher” award at an international school in China. This year as he reaches ten years of teaching experience, he will take charge of the extensive extracurricular activities programme at Malvern College Chengdu, with the aim of ensuring all pupils benefit from our holistic education.
 
 

Dr. Mariam Hashmi

Dr. Mariam Hashmi received her doctorate from The University of Mumbai and has extensive experience as a secondary school chemistry teacher. Prior to joining Malvern College Chengdu, she taught in several well-known international schools in Beijing, Shanghai, and Jiangsu. Dr. Hashmi has always been dedicated herself to work on the integration of Chinese and Western chemistry curricula and on designing chemistry lessons on various topics for different grades within the school. She is also an advocator of moving chemistry classes from traditional classrooms into chemistry laboratories, believing that laboratories enable students to conduct their own experiments and to draw their own conclusions. This not only enhances students’ hands-on skills but also helps them to improve their academic research skills.

Eva Zhou

Eva Zhou

Ms. Eva Zhou holds an MSc in Management from the University of Nottingham and a BA in Business Administration from Kingston University, where she was the Faculty Scholarship winner. She also studied at the Sichuan International Studies University, where she received a BA in English and was also the recipient of a Faculty Scholarship and a National Scholarship. Since 2013, Ms. Zhou has worked in the field of university admissions planning. She has numerous professional certificates and abundant experience in helping students enhance their qualifications and university applications. In 2017, Ms. Zhou joined Malvern College Chengdu and led its first batch of graduates to achieve excellent results. To date, she has successfully mentored four classes of graduates who have all garnered numerous offers from top universities outside of China. Ms. Zhou always aims to help students find the career/study options that best match their interests and talents, and she strongly believes that there is no such thing as “the best university”, only “the most suitable choice”. Her students have received offers from University of Notre Dame, USA; Imperial College London; The London School of Economics and Political Science; University College London; King’s College London; University of British Columbia; University of Toronto; University of California, Los Angeles; University of California, Berkeley; University of California, Santa Barbara; The University of Hong Kong; and many other top universities.
 
 

Dan Marcacci

Mr. Marcacci is highly involved in his lively, yet professional, P.E. classes, attributes which have made him one of the most popular teachers among the students. A graduate of the University of Southern Indiana, Mr. Marcacci was once selected for Major League Baseball. He also plays American football and is highly proficient in sports management. Prior to moving to China, Mr. Marcacci taught at a school in Florida where he was responsible for designing the curriculum and managing student behavior. He also coached baseball and trained the baseball team at a top secondary school in Florida before moving to China to work for a sports team in Chengdu as Head of the International Division and Director of Development. In this capacity, he was responsible for the development of a major league baseball programme for secondary school students.
