What are stem cells?

Stem cells are undeveloped cells with multi-directional replication and self-ability. Therefore, they are very important for our human beings, and understanding them is to understand ourselves.

Bring “Stem cells” into the campus

Recently, the Parent Encyclopedia Lecture was launched. With the invitation from MCC’s Parent-Teacher Association (PTA), the expert team of Sichuan Cord Blood Stem Cell Bank brought fascinating science lessons to our Grade 1 to 6 students in our primary school. By using videos, simple theories and interesting liquid nitrogen experiments, our students participated in the science classes, which opened a science world that they had never seen before.

Various classroom activities

“Where do stem cells come from, and what are their functions?” In the classroom, the expert teacher Pu introduced the stem cells to the children through vivid videos and interesting questions. After understanding that the cells of the human body have a variety of peculiar abilities, and their potential to repair the damage of important tissues and organs of the human body and cure some diseases, the students were amazed. Through group discussions, collecting and understanding various questions, it allowed students and experts to have a deeper interaction.

“What is the important mystery item for storing stem cells?”

Expert Zhenyang Lai told the students that liquid nitrogen is used to store stem cells. Ms Lai brought this magical liquid nitrogen to the classroom, thus starting the next interesting and wonderful experimental journey. Under the guidance of experts, the students were divided into different groups to conduct liquid nitrogen experiments. They participated in and witnessed the wonderful process of ice flowers and balloons turning into water polo, which is an eyes-opening experience for them.

This science experience class activity lasted for two days. It was like a science seed buried in the children’s hearts. Through continuous learning and watering, we believe that the children’s beautiful vision will become a towering tree, and they will dedicate themselves to become a pillar of our motherland in the future.

*The Parent Encyclopedia Lecture is a special activity set up by the PTA (Parent-Teacher Association) Committee of the Primary School. It is committed to building a home-school co-education platform, inviting parents and experts in related fields to enter the classroom, participating in education, and broadening students’ thinking and horizons.

The Head of School at MCC Dr. Jill Cowie presented the “Encyclopedia Parents Lecture Hall Honor Trophy” to the parents, and Ms Sunny Shang, the Head of Primary school, presented souveniors to the experts.
