Malvern College Chengdu: Outward Bound training in Yangshuo

IN THIS SECTION

 January 5, 2017

This year, a group of MCC students travelled to Yangshuo to take part in “The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award”. Below are some students’ comments about the trip.

The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award is an award program for young people founded in the United Kingdom in 1956 that has since expanded to 144 nations. The award recognizes adolescents and young adults for completing a series of self-improvement exercises modelled on Kurt Hahn’s solution to the “Six Declines of Modern Youth.”

On this trip, the most important task for students was to obtain the Bronze Award of The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award. For the Bronze Award, students had to complete a hike and MCC hired a professional team to assist students complete the task.

To start the hike the students needed to learn how to use the maps and recognize the terrain.

With professional coaches and MCC teachers, students were divided into nine groups and everyone prepared to start the 16 km hike.

For students, giving up is easier than persistence. However, every student from MCC persisted and worked together in their groups.

Students finish the hike and arrive at the camping ground.

With only one nights rest, the students’ next challenge is a 30km hike; cooking and camping for themselves.

This is the route the students took.

Camping

Students arrived at the camping ground, and while some student pitched tents, others cooked dinner for everyone.

The next day the students continued their hike with a quick snack for lunch.

The hike is tough going for our students, but they are happy to be enjoying the company of their fellow students.

Success comes to those who persist. Finally, with persistence and team work, the hike is done.

Drawing fans

Yangshuo has a long history, so during this trip our students experienced Chinese culture by learning how to draw fans.

Students visited Mo’s fans to learn how to draw a nice fan.

Students listened to the teacher’s instruction carefully.

The students begin to draw a fan.

A nice fan.

Underground grotto trip

Students explore the grotto.

The teachers talk to our students about Karst landforms and rocks found in the grottos.

At the end of the training, students celebrated a birthday together.

In the future MCC will continue to follow the ideals of holistic development by creating more opportunities like these for our students to broaden their learning experience and skill set.
