Malvern College Chengdu, seeks to appoint a Music Teacher for Malvern College Chengdu, China, to join our experienced academic team

For 2017 there is a requirement to recruit further academic teachers to join MCC due to the rise in student applications to the school. We invite you to join us in this exciting journey, bringing top-class international education to China. Chengdu is located in Sichuan province and has a rich heritage and a moderate continental climate. It is a rapidly growing city with an affluent population and, as the business hub of Sichuan province, is home to many multinational companies and a large tourist industry. Chengdu is a lively city with a friendly and vibrant local and expat community. The city is a fantastic location for domestic and international travel, with many great destinations right here in Sichuan. There is a fast and clean metro train system running across the city. Sichuan is well known for its cuisine and Chengdu offers local and international restaurants, tea houses and the famous hotpot. Sichuan is home of the panda and the nearest visitors centre is only 10 minutes from the school campus.

Core Purpose

The role is to provide high quality teaching and learning of Music within the Music department; to assist the Head of Department with raising the profile of the subject throughout the school

Job Description

The successful candidate will:

  • To teach Music throughout Malvern College Chengdu (Years 7 – 13) IGCSE, AS and A level
  • Implement and deliver an appropriately broad, balanced, relevant and differentiated Music curriculum for students and to support a designated curriculum area as appropriate
  • To be involved with other aspects of school life associated with the subject, such as organising appropriate educational trips and visits
  • To assist the HOD with developing Schemes of Work
  • To assist the HOD with the department’s development plan and its implementation;
  • To play a part in the broader life and running of this international boarding school
  • To encourage and support the use of ICT in lessons
  • To monitor your classes’ work and assessment grades and keep pupil achievement records
  • To take intervention actions when assessment and report grades identify a cause of concern regarding a students’ progress your class
  • To support and work collegiately with other members of the department
  • To write reports and enter assessment grades when required
  • To assist the HOD with preparation of up to date set lists when requested
  • To take an interest in all pupils in your classes
  • To support and work with the Departmental team (including administrative support staff where appropriate);
  • To assist the HOD with the analysis of examination results when requested
  • To seek out and share teaching resources with colleagues
  • To be responsible for your classroom
  • To attend parents meetings and other school events as directed by the Headmaster
  • To play a full role in the active life of a full boarding school.
  • To offer at least one extra-curricular activity to the students in Malvern College Chengdu.
  • To be committed to the ideal of an holistic education for all.

Person Specification

To carry out the above duties, the Headmaster and Board, with support from Malvern College UK, are seeking to appoint an experienced and committed professional.

Essential requirements:

  • A very well qualified Music Graduate and exhibit a high level of Musicianship
  • A relevant Music teaching qualification and an effective teaching practitioner
  • A proven track record of motivating students to engage in music making
  • A proven ability to bring about improvements in the quality of teaching and learning across a curriculum area that results in improved outcomes for students
  • An effective communicator
  • Strong working knowledge of the English National Curriculum, specifically A level
  • Committed to the protection and safeguarding of children and young people
  • Energy, enthusiasm and a sense of humour
  • Passionate and ambitious about the success of MCC
  • Is committed to continuing professional development and staff INSET

Desirable requirements:

  • Hold a higher degree and/or post-entry level management qualification
  • Competent in the use of ICT and software/hardware based teaching resources
  • Experience of teaching children for whom English is an additional language
  • Experience of teaching in international settings, especially in China
